Skin Care Basics + My Routine for Oily and Sensitive Skin

by - Saturday, February 11, 2017

Just a quick disclaimer, this is going to be a very LONG post because I want to be as informative as I can about this topic since it's very important, at least for me. Today I am going to talk to you about skin care and my daily routine. By the way, I'm in no way an expert nor am I a dermatologist but just a girl who is passionate about skin care trying to share what she knows from personal experiences, spending an embarrassing amount of time researching about beauty, and from formerly working in the beauty industry. If you don't mind a lengthy post and want to learn more about skin care, please continue reading 😌

I have oily, sensitive skin and quite frankly it's very troublesome. I'm honestly still looking for a magic potion that will stop my oiliness but I know that's impossible. What's possible, however, is maintaining clear skin which means being clear of blemishes and texture. If you know me personally, you would know that I am obsessed with skin care and the reason is because you only have one skin and I find that it makes a lot more sense to invest in taking care of it rather than piling on endless makeup to cover your face and just end up making things worse. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with piling on makeup but I have to stress how starting off with a good base makes a world of a difference in the application of your makeup and overall it makes you feel confident even on days when you don't feel like wearing any makeup at all.

I used to have acne a long time ago so I know how it feels to struggle in finding a solution to cure it. So trust me when I tell you that having clear and beautiful skin is absolutely achievable, it's just that you have to be disciplined, patient and willing to look for products that will work best for your skin. I've found that the best way is by finding and maintaining a spot-on skin care regimen.

The Skin Care Formula
Clinique 3-Step Skin Care System
Clinique's 3-Step Skin Care System
Back when I worked at Clinique, I discovered this thing called the 3-step skin care system. It is basically using a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer hence the "3-step". I think this is the most basic but very essential regimen that a person with any skin type should have. Once you have these 3 basics down, you can custom-fit your regimen by adding in products that target a specific skin concern that you may have such as maybe adding a serum that has vitamin C if you have concerns with dark spots or adding a honey night cream if you are concerned with dry skin. Honestly, there are so many products and variations you can try if you're willing to invest on your skin. Even if you're on a budget, there are still so many amazing and inexpensive products out there in the market which I'll try my best to share more with you in the future. With regards to skin care layering, it can be a bit overwhelming and confusing especially at first. Heck, I get confused with it too sometimes but below is a basic formula you can use as a guide to layering your products:

Morning: Cleanser + Toner + Essence/Serum + Eye Cream + Moisturizer + Sunblock
Evening: Makeup remover + Cleanser + Toner + Essence/Serum + Eye Cream + Moisturizer + Night Cream or Sleeping Mask

My Daily Skin Care Routine for Oily and Sensitive Skin

You'll probably look at the products I use and think that's a LOT but this is just my preference. I am someone who really invests in good skin care so I use these quite religiously and honestly it's kind of therapeutic for me but if you're feeling too lazy to do all of these things or simply don't have the time, you can totally do so but make sure to at least stick with your basic 3-step products. I won't be making a long review for each since this is already a novel as it is, but please let me know if you want a dedicated review on any of these products. That being said, let's move on to my current skin care regimen for oily and sensitive skin. (I've included the links per product if they're available online otherwise, I'll mention where you can buy them)

Morning
My morning skin care routine
My morning skin care routine
  1. Cosrx Low Ph Good Morning Cleanser (from theskincarecurator) - Cleansing is my first step every morning and what I love to use is this cleanser from Cosrx that has a low ph which is a good thing to look for in a cleanser especially if you have sensitive skin because it's very gentle. Cosrx is an awesome Korean brand that has a lot of products catered for people with acne-prone and sensitive skin types. This cleanser is so refreshing in the morning and it has tea tree too which I love.
  2. Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner (from Etude House counters or althea.kr) - I've already mentioned this product in my favorites of 2016 which you can read here but basically I mentioned how effective this product is especially in terms of cleaning and minimizing the pores. Toning is a step that is sometimes being skipped which I've typically heard from people who experience dry skin but let me tell you, that's wrong! This step shouldn't be skipped at all regardless of your skin type because it helps remove the dead skin cells, excess sebum, and other dirt that if left on your face can lead to clogged pores, blemishes, and even rough skin. If you have a dry skin type, don't skip this step but rather find a moisturizing toner. I like using toners from Korean brands like this one since they are usually non astringent and more on the moisturizing side.
  3. Dear, Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop (from shop.pibu) - Also mentioned in my favorites, the Klairs Vitamin Drop is great in brightening the face and giving it a smoother, more even texture. I have to note, however, that the consistency of this is more like a dry oil than a serum which might scare you if you have oily skin but trust me, it dries down quick to a very smooth and soft texture on your skin. It truly is a beautiful product and this is one of those "add-on" or sort of booster skin care products that you can include in your routine depending on your skin concern.
  4. Skinfood Salmon Brightening Eye Cream (from Skinfood counters or althea.kr) - Did you know that the skin around the eye area is the most sensitive part of your face making it prone to dryness which leads to wrinkles? That is why it is important to use an eye cream because it's usually formulated especially for that area, giving it it's much needed moisture. The Skinfood Salmon Brightening eye cream is pretty new in my vanity so I have yet to give it a proper review. The one that I have tried that worked best for my dark circles is the Clinique Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector, go check that out if you are looking to target darkness under the eyes.
  5. Naruko Raw Job's Tears Supercritical CO2 Pore Minimizing & Brightening Essence (from naruko.ph) - This product is actually a serum that targets pores and claims to give the skin a brightening effect and it's pretty new in my vanity too but I'm actually quite impressed so far. You might be confused with serums and essences and you can definitely use both in your routine or pick one that will target your skin concern. This one from Naruko specifically targets pores and uneven skin tone. I won't dwell too much about this product since I'm saving it for another review but basically what you need to know is that a serum or essence is what can transform your skin the most especially since most of these type of products are packed with potent ingredients.
  6. Bioré UV Aqua Rich Whitening Essence Sunblock SPF 50+ PA++++(from Watson's) - Sunblock is so important to apply in the morning especially if you are going to be exposed in the sun. Another trivia for you, too much sun exposure can lead to premature skin aging and dark spots so don't think twice about taking that extra step the next time you walk out the door. Sunblock is a great product to protect your skin from the harmful uv rays. This sunblock from Bioré is an awesome product because not only is it high in spf, but it is so lightweight and undetectable on the face and the best thing about it is it's so inexpensive! I think this is a good one for any skin type.

Evening
My evening skin care routine
  1. Shu Uemura Anti-oxi + skin refining Cleansing Oil (from Shu Uemura counters)- I use this cleansing oil to remove all my makeup and it is really effective. I know an oil must sound scary to use if you have oily skin but the truth is that's just a misconception and you can totally use this even if you have an oily skin type. As you can see, I'm almost out of this since I've had this for the longest time and use it every single time to remove my makeup. How this works is you massage it on dry skin then apply a bit of water enough for it to emulsify and create a milky texture, then rinse it off with water. I found this to effectively remove all my makeup so definitely check out the Shu Uemura cleansing oils when you get the chance. There are so many other ways to remove your makeup but this is the best I've found so far. However, I have to mention that Shu Uemura is closing all its stores here in the Philippines-sad I know 😢 so if you're planning to buy, go do it now because I'm not sure how long they will be open.
  2. Clinique Sonic System Purifying Cleansing Brush + Klairs cleanser (Clinique counters, althea.kr) - I use these two together every night. I like the Clinique cleansing brush because I feel like it gets rid of all the dirt and gunk in my face even more so than when I just use my hands. Using a cleansing brush is totally optional but for me personally, it works plus it's so fun to use! I've already talked about the Klairs cleanser so if you want to read my thoughts on that, please click here. Since I wear makeup, I make sure my face is totally clean before applying my other products.
  3. Etude House Wonder Pore Freshner - already mentioned above
  4. Skin Food Salmon Eye Cream- already mentioned above
  5. Naruko Jacob's Tears Essence - already mentioned above
  6. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel (from Clinique counters) - This is such a classic product and if you don't know about it, it's a lightweight gel-type moisturizer that balances out the oil and water in the skin which is necessary for healthy skin. You may have noticed that I don't use this in the morning and that's because I find that using this along with my Naruko essence makes my skin a bit oilier than usual and I don't like over-moisturizing my face in the morning so I use it at night instead. Again, one of the misconceptions about having oily skin is that you shouldn't use a moisturizer and that's wrong because even if your face is oily, it will get dehydrated and in turn your skin compensates by producing even more oil which is counter intuitive. What you should do instead is look for a gel-type moisturizer like this one that is specifically made for oily skin types.
If you're still reading this, congratulations you made it! 😄 I tried my best to explain everything so if this helped you in any way at all, I hope you can pay it forward by sharing this post with another person or if you just want to spread the love please feel free to do so💖.
Wishing you bright and clear skin days ahead! 😉
